Welcome To Prairie Dirt Writings

Greetings and welcome to Prairie Dirt Writings.
On this blog you will find some of my favorite writings over my 20-plus years of involvement with the dirt track racing community.
Writing is like taking a photograph. It is capturing a moment in time.
These articles, columns, reports and releases are unedited.
I hope you enjoy reading this collection as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Anniversaries, Sprint and Mod Specials Highlight 2018

CAOSS invades Estevan Motor Speedway on June 22 & 23

Well race fans, schedules for the 2018 dirt track racing season are starting to take shape.

As we patiently wait to return to our favourite tracks, let's have a brief look at a few events and notes of interest for this upcoming season.

The Canadian American Outlaw Sprintcar Series (CAOSS) have released their 2018 touring schedule. The majority of their races will take place at Devil's Lake Speedway, ND, plus Minot's Nodak Speedway and special weekend events at Dacotah Speedway and Estevan Motor Speedway.

Yes race fans, Estevan Motor Speedway will be making history as they host their very first 2-night CAOSS sprint car event on June 22 and 23. The Southeastern Saskatchewan high-banked 3/8 mile dirt oval has traditionally offered a smooth, fast, multi-groove racing surface that is perfect for not only it's regular IMCA-sanctioned car classes but for the high-flying sprint cars when they come to town. This year's weekend event has attracted a lot of interest by racing teams and promises to be something special that you won't want to miss.

Speaking of tradition, Alberta's Castrol Raceway will once again host the Sportsman Sprint Xtreme Cup weekend on July 27 and 28, followed by their annual 360 Sprint "Jim Albert Memorial" Gold Cup event on August 17 and 18.

Congratulations to the members of the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association who are celebrating their 25th Anniversary season. Although their home track of River Cities Speedway offers weekly short track racing on Friday nights, NOSA also travels to race at tracks in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota. May the Grand Forks, North Dakota-based group continue entertaining open wheel dirt track racing fans for many years to come.

Speaking of River Cities Speedway, Mike Spieker of Spieker Promotions reported that the Grand Forks bullring will host an IMCA Modified Bracket Racing Special on Friday, July 6. NOSA Sprints, Wissota Late Models and IMCA Mods will be a night of racing not to be missed.

Kenora, Ontario's Lake of the Woods Speedway is set to begin it's inaugural season and there's a lot of excitement surrounding it. Kicking off on June 22, the low banked 3/8 mile dirt oval will feature 4-Cylinders, Pure Stocks and WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds as their weekly program. Their special event of the summer will feature a WISSOTA Modified race on August 5. Beautiful Ontario scenery and racing. Sounds like a great idea for the August long weekend!

Outlook Stockcar Association (Saskatchewan) has post their schedule and will be racing one weekend each month starting on the last weekend of May and ending with their annual Fall Classic scheduled for October 6-7.

Last year's 3 track Stock Car Mini Circuit has expanded to 4 dirt tracks and 3 car classes this season. In addition to Swan River, Yorkton and Tisdale, Swift Current's Living Sky Casino Speedway has reportedly been added to the circuit. Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks and Modifieds will compete for additional cash and prizes. All dates are scheduled in conjunction with the race tracks' annual Invitationals. Dates are August 4-5 (Swan River, MB), August 18-19 (Yorkton), September 14-15 (Swift Current) and September 29-30 (Tisdale). Once again, Ryan and Jen Atkings are involved and by all appearances are growing something special for regional stock car racing in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
