Welcome To Prairie Dirt Writings

Greetings and welcome to Prairie Dirt Writings.
On this blog you will find some of my favorite writings over my 20-plus years of involvement with the dirt track racing community.
Writing is like taking a photograph. It is capturing a moment in time.
These articles, columns, reports and releases are unedited.
I hope you enjoy reading this collection as much as I enjoyed writing them.

Bernard Kicks 2015 NLSA Tour Into Overdrive

Tim Johnson photo
Roland Bernard has been a dominant force in Manitoba's Lightning Sprint racing scene.

Greg Cybulski (June 14, 2015) Since it's inaugural season in 2009, The Northern Lightning Sprint Association's poster boy has been Winnipeg's Roland Bernard, and with good reason. After 6 years behind the wheel of his #2 Lightning Sprint, Bernard is not showing any signs of letting his foot off the gas as he continues his winning ways in Manitoba's longest running open wheel car class.

Since 2009, Bernard has been an NLSA Points champion. He has won local track championships and prestigious regional events such as the annual Chad Olson Memorial at Greenbush Race Park, MN.

The NLSA kicked off it's 2015 Tour in Greenbush Race Park, MN on May 23rd. Of 16 competitors from Manitoba, Minnesota and North Dakota, Bernard came in 2nd place in his Heat race and starting from 9th in the field, capped off the evening with another Feature checkered flag.

The 2nd stop on the Lightning Sprint Tour was Winnipeg's Red River Co-op Speedway on Thursday, June 11. Bernard continued his winning streak by sweeping both his Heat race as well as his 2nd consecutive Feature checkered flag in a field of 13 Lightning Sprints.

2 nights later, the NLSA made their 2nd Tour visit to Greenbush Race Park, MN. and once again, the familiar #2 Sprinter ended the evening with a solid 2nd place finish in the Feature race.

Although it is early in the season and there is still plenty of racing to go, Roland Bernard is quickly showing why he continues to be a huge presence in the highly competitive, lightning-fast open wheel car class.

When Bernard and the rest of the Northern Lightning Sprint Association roll into your favourite dirt track, they are the must-see regional Tour of 2015.

Greg Cybulski (June 11, 2015) Swift Current racer Bob Heffer swept 2 nights of racing in the IMCA Modified class at his home track, Speedy Creek Raceway on June 5th and 6th.

Heffer, piloting his #66 IMCA Modified, took 1st place and 2nd place in his respective Heat races and capped off Night 1 with his first of two 20-lap feature wins.

Early Season Success Not Just Destiny's Hobby

Greg Cybulski (May 27, 2015) The 2015 dirt track racing season is still young but one Saskatchewan racer appears to be enjoying where she has been running so far.

Weyburn's Destiny Klym kicked off her season with an impressive run at Estevan Motor Speedway where she won her Heat race and finished an impressive 2nd place out of 23 competing IMCA Hobby Stocks in the Feature. This was her personal best at the fast Southeast Saskatchewan 3/8 mile oval dirt track.

She then backed that up with a respectable Victoria Day weekend performance at Swift Current's Speedy Creek Raceway. Despite struggling in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature, Klym won her 2nd Heat race of the day and posted the fastest lap times in both of her Heat races.

On Victoria Day, Destiny matched her previous day's feat by posting quickest lap times in one of her Heats and in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature. This time around, she won another Heat race and found her way to Victory Lane, capturing the checkered flag on the Monday afternoon Feature.

One week later, on May 24, she found her groove again with another Heat win and took her 2nd checkered flag at the Southwest Saskatchewan 1/4 mile dirt bullring.

Early success builds confidence in a racer. When it comes to Destiny Klym, she may very well be in for a season to remember.

Saturday Rain Doesn't Stop Scholpp's Weekend Reign

Lisa Crowe photo
Kody Scholpp on the gas in Stefan Klym's 5K Street Stock at Speedy Creek Raceway.

Greg Cybulski (May 19, 2015) Weather was the biggest topic on the lips of most Canadians this past Victoria Day long weekend.  More so with Southern Saskatchewan's 2 primary oval dirt tracks.  With rain in the forecast, Estevan Motor Speedway officials made the decision to pull the plug on Saturday's scheduled races.

Swift Current's Speedy Creek Raceway was scheduled to race on Saturday and Sunday.  Rain spoiled the opener which was rescheduled for the holiday Monday.  When all was said and done, 2 days of racing took place at the Southwest Saskatchewan bullring.

Estevan's Kody Scholpp stole the show by winning 3 of 4 Features this weekend.  On Sunday, Scholpp raced his #22 IMCA Modified to victory lane and followed it up with a win behind the wheel of Stefan Klym's 5K Street Stock.  Rain date Monday was just as good for Kody as he finished 2nd place in the IMCA Modified feature and then found the checkered flag once again in the 5K Street Stock.
