The lilacs are in bloom in Winnipeg so it must mean one thing. The racing season is starting to heat up at Victory Lane Speedway.
In the NOPA/Wissota Modified division, reigning track champion Kevin Sexton has had his hands full with Badger, Minnesota's Nolan Olmstead and Scott Greer of East St. Paul, Manitoba. Following an on-the-edge-of-your-seat winning performance by Sexton over Danny Staff in May, Kevin's luck changed with a DNF and a spinner in the following two races. Still, he only trails both Olmstead and Greer by a mere 4 points and appears to be getting back to his winning form.
Reigning NOSA sprint champion Mark Dobmeier continues his winning ways at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND. He has won 4 of the first 5 races run this season and it looks like it will be another stellar year for the #13 sprinter. The first NOSA Tour date was won by Harwood, ND's Loren Langerud who made the trip to Nodak Speedway in Minot, ND on May 23rd. Langerud is the reigning two-time Wissota 360 Sprint National Points champion and has been eating up the competition at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, ND this season. 17 teams participated at Nodak and despite threats of rain, the precipitation stayed away long enough to run the entire program.

TIME FOR CHANGE
There is a lot of instability in today's North Dakota sprint car scene and I for one don't like it. If you've read the internet message boards there are continual examples of drivers from Wissota unhappy with the way they have been relegated to third class status in the racing world according to Wissota. The Northern Outlaw Sprint Association (NOSA) itself is but a mere shell of what it was supposed to be and what it should have been. It appears that the politics of outside interests controlling the club have rendered it ineffective and outdated in the interests of all drivers and teams involved.
The number one draw in these parts is the NLRA Late Model Tour based in Grand Forks, ND. Established in 1988, a group of professional Late Model drivers and owners organized to help promote Late Model racing in the interests of the fans, drivers and tracks and to nurture and grow it into a sustainable entity. Now in 2004, the NLRA has become a major success story with growth not only in numbers of members, but growth in Tour dates. Tying in with Wissota makes them attractive for regional racers to run with who are racing for the Wissota National Points Title. This helps bolster car counts on the tour dates.
What would be wrong with a North Dakota based 360 sprint car organization who could race for their own points deal and be able to tie into Wissota to get better car counts and make the fans and track promoters happy? I'd go, wouldn't you? What the sprint car teams of North Dakota need to do is take a page out of the NLRA book of success and learn something from it.

COUNTDOWN TO GREEN
Well race fans, by the time you read these words the 2004 racing season will be underway. The northern dirt track scene has it's share of unanswered questions entering this new year. At my home track of Victory Lane Speedway, Winnipeg, MB., two divisions will be worth watching. In the NOPA/Wissota Super Stock class, with the departure of 2003 Track Champion Tom Balcaen of Winnipeg to the Northern Late Model Racing Association (NLRA), the front runners for the 2004 honors should be 2002 VLS Champion Bill Mooney of East St. Paul, MB. and Mike McCaughan of St Francis Xavier, MB. Unless a dark horse comes into play, expect a hotly contested battle all season long.
NOPA/Wissota Modified Champion Kevin Sexton of West St. Paul, MB. will have his hands full pulling double duty with his new NLRA Late Model and still running his Modified at Victory Lane on Thursday nights. The question on peoples minds in the off-season have been whether Sexton's Late Model program will take away the edge off of his Mod program and perhaps affording his biggest challenger, Nolan Olmstead of Badger, MN. an opportunity to grab the VLS Track Championship.

They will be hosted by Williston Basin Speedway, ND. in May as well as a return to Canada with an August 14th date at Estevan Motor Speedway, Saskatchewan. The biggest sprint car question for 2004 is the repeat performance of 2003 Champion Mark Dobmeier. If Mark is the real deal, he will need to back up his title with another strong performance. Many insiders say that team Dobmeier has the potential to go places. If they continue to show dominant runs, not only in NOSA but when they travel to Huset's Speedway and other races, their stock will continue to rise.
Any way you slice it, 2004 will have it's share of drama to unfold and I'm looking forward to every moment of it.
