SUNSHINE TOYOTA ASCS SPRINT CAR SPECIAL HEATS UP
Greg Cybulski, WINNIPEG, MB (June 4, 2009) One month remains until the most anticipated open wheel race weekend of the summer descends upon the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Prairie Dirt Classic weekend fever is heating up as news of additional sprint car teams adding their names to the growing list of participants for both Winnipeg and Swift Current reaches new heights.
The biggest news to hit the Prairie Dirt Classic weekend is the return of Travis Rutz to western Canada's open wheel racing scene. The native of Langley, B.C. will be driving the #39 sprinter of Richard and Lana Samure in Winnipeg and Swift Current before heading to Edmonton to compete at Castrol Raceway's 2009 Gold Cup. In 2007, Rutz won the inaugural Prairie Dirt Classic in Swift Current, the Gold Cup at Castrol Raceway and the Alberta Sprint Tour points championship. Travis is a regular competitor at Skagit Speedway with 410 and 360 wins under his belt, including the prestigious Skagit Speedway 360 Nationals in 2006 and 2008.
From the Upper Midwest, North Dakota's Dave Glennon is no stranger to racing north of the border. Dave participated in NOSA-sanctioned races at Southeast Saskatchewan's Estevan Motor Speedway in 2004 and 2005. Now in 2009, the pilot of the #5 ASCS sprint car is coming up to take a shot at the $2000-to-win prize money. "I'm really looking forward to making the trip to Winnipeg for one of the biggest 360 races in our area. I appreciate the work everyone has done to put together an excellent purse."
Making his Canadian debut, 2-time ASCS Northern Plains champion, Lee Grosz of Harwood, North Dakota shared his excitement about racing in Winnipeg and running with the newly formed ASCS CanWest series. "I'm looking forward to going up to Canada and racing. It's always fun going to new places and new tracks. I think this is going to be a good deal they are starting up there."
ASCS 360 sprint teams from three states and four Canadian provinces have been confirmed for the Sunshine Toyota ASCS Sprint Car Special on Thursday, July 2nd at Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg. Racers from North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota as well as the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will treat Manitoba's dirt track fans to their first American Sprint Car Series race. The race weekend features teams from two ASCS territories, the Alberta-based ASCS CanWest series and the ASCS Northern Plains of the Upper Midwest.
